As the story goes, I was six years old. Yet, I had been having an ongoing dialogue with my momma since I was three. The topic, the same hope, same dream. – You see, I was an only child and I desperately wanted a sibling. “Momma, this Christmas I think Jesus is gonna give me a baby brother or sister. I think he told me.”
Momma said ” Sweetie, I am sorry but Jesus is not going to do that. And he DID NOT tell you that.” Still, I …… was relentless.
Every Christmas, same thing. So this one particular year, Momma had an idea. “Why don’t we buy a few gifts and take them to the orphanage.” She thought this gesture would redirect my focus from what I wanted to someone in need. No such luck. My desire was only intensified, just re-routed to a possible alternative of my original plan. I said “well, Momma, let’s do that and maybe one of the boys or girls will pick us.
Momma’s mouth dropped in astonishment. Was her plan about to backfire?
She pressed on, suggesting we go to a toy store and get 3 or 4 presents for a drop off. Already on the verge of becoming a mobilizer in training and according to my parents a bonified little Bossy Pants, I suggested we go to the dollar store where we could get more toys for more kids. So on to the mission of the dollar store extravaganza we went.
Momma indulged me, allowing me to pick every single toy while filling the cart to the rim with our ten dollar budget. We wrapped all the gifts and departed to the orphanage. I asked if we could see the kids, still hoping beyond hope that one would adopt us. “No, sweetie they don’t need to know the presents are from us. The secret give is between us and Jesus. That’s what makes it so special.”
As years passed, the gift of a sibling never came to be, but the spirit of giving was indelibly imprinted in my heart – never to leave. From that point on, no matter how little or how much I had, the greatest gift was the joy received from the secret give – the gift given without anyone knowing it was from me.
Matthew 6:1-4 Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
